Wings Fly to Second Win
May 31st, 2009

Valteri Filppula got a goal in the second that turned out to be the winner as the Detroit Red Wings took a 2-0 series lead in the Stanley Cup Finals.
A late fight broke out between Penguin superstar Evgeni Malkin and Red Wings superstar Henrik Zetterberg.
“I think in the playoffs and finals like this, there is a lot of emotions, a lot of feelings,” said Zetterberg. “When you get scrums that’s the way it is. It should be a lot of feelings, and nothing more than that.”
Malkin was given an instigator penalty, but the NHL will not be suspending him for game 3.
The Penguins are in a tough spot heading home, but Red Wings head coach Mike Babcock still knows that there is a long way to go.
“We’re going to go into a tough building, their building. I’ve been impressed with how hard they’ve played,” explained Babcock. “Right throughout their lineup, they’ve put a lot of heat on us at times.”
The Penguins had control for most of the first period, but the Red Wings took over in the second and third.
Justin Abdelkader had his second goal in two games.
Also scoring for the Red Wings was Jonathan Ericsson, and scoring for the Penguins was Evgeni Malkin on the power play.

The Detroit Red Wings got some lucky bounces and defeated the Pittsburgh Penguins 3-1 in game 1 of the 2009 Stanley Cup Final.
Henrik Zetterberg and Penguins captain Sidney Crosby battled throughout the night, Zetterberg rang one off the post early in the game.
“Early on Crosby really tried to take it physically to Zetterberg, but as the game went along, Zetterberg started to assert himself,” explained NHL on TSN’s Bob McKenzie. “I thought Crosby played a very good hockey game in a lot of ways, but at the end of the night it was Zetterberg who came away the winner.”
Brad Stuart opened the scoring on a weird bounce that went off Fleury’s pad and into the net.
Shortly after, the Penguins struck back when Evgeni Malkin shot and Ruslan Fedotanko got the rebound.
The Penguins looked strong early in the second, with several scoring chances, but Red Wings goaltender Chris Osgood held them in the game.
The puck would then go off the end boards, onto Johan Franzens stick and he would bank it off Fleury for the goal.
Justin Abdelkader got his first career NHL goal, when he got his own rebound out of the air and put it high on Fleury.
The next game is Sunday night at 8:00 P.M. EST.

Darren Helm scored 3:58 into overtime to lift the Detroit Red Wings over the Chicago Blackhawks in 5 games. This sets up the first repeat of the finals since 1984.
“We lose guys but we still get the job done” said Red Wings defencemen Brett Lebda, who had a goal in the win for Detroit.
The finals will start Saturday night in Detroit. The interesting fact is that Marian Hossa turned down a good offer from the Penguins to play with Detroit because they had a better shot at winning it all.
The Red Wings are trying to repeat, for the 2nd straight time.
Detroit was without six-time Norris Trophy-winning defenceman Lidstrom; his replacement, Jonathan Ericsson; MVP finalist Datsyuk; and four-time Cup-winning forward Kris Draper.

The Pittsburgh Penguins defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 and booked their trip to the Stanley Cup Finals. Max Talbot had a goal and two assists to help the Penguins beat the Carolina Hurricanes 4-1 on Tuesday night and finish off a sweep in the Eastern Conference finals. The Penguins will hope that a repeat of last years finals will not happen.
The Penguins outscored the Hurricanes 20-9 in the series, netted at least three goals in each game, and trailed for a total of 20 minutes, 30 seconds in advancing to the Cup finals for the fourth time.
“Just knowing what to expect, hopefully there’ll not be too much surprises,” captain Crosby said. “We talk about experience all the time, but it is hard to learn.” Last year, the Penguins stuck to superstitious tradition and didn’t touch the Eastern Conference championship trophy. That led to a loss, so this time Crosby picked it up and skated away with it.
“Things didnt go how we wanted last year, so we switched it up this year.” said Crosby about touching the trophy.

Windsor Spitfires 2009 Memorial Cup Champions

The Windsor Spitfires scored 3 goals on their first 3 shots to defeat the Kelowna Rockets 4-1 and win the Memorial Cup. Adam Henrique, Dale Mitchell and Rob Kwiet scored in the first period, while Ryan Ellis got one in the second for the Spitfires, who opened the tournament with a pair of losses and then ran off four straight wins to take the title.
The win ended the reign of the Western Hockey League as Canadian junior hockey champions after wins in 2007 by the Vancouver Giants and 2008 by the Spokane Chiefs. Windsor is the first Ontario Hockey League club to win since the London Knights in 2005. Rockets captain Colin Long scored the loan goal for the Rockets.
“We knew if anyone could do it, it was us,” said team captain Harry Young. “We have such a close group here. “It was the first time this year we really faced adversity and we pulled through.”
“With the atmosphere at home and all the people supporting us, it means everything for us to do this for them,” added Young. “Being a local kid, they’ve been talking about that ‘88 team for so many years and now they’ll be talking about us.
The Spitfires also brought out the No. 18 jersey of Mickey Renaud, their former captain who died suddenly of an apparent heart problem during the 2007-08 season. The team keeps the jersey in the locker room so he is not forgotten.
“We knew he was watching over us all tournament,” said Young, one of Renaud’s closest friends.
“It’s difficult when you give up goals early on,” said Kelowna coach Ryan Huska. “I thought we did a good job of making sure we didn’t quit or lose that emotional control.
Many among the 4,811 Colisee fans sporadically booed the Rockets, apparently on the premise that they didn’t try hard enough to eliminate Windsor when they had a chance in their final round robin game — a 2-1 Spitfires win over a Kelowna side that had already clinched a berth in the final.
After that win, the Spitfires beat Rimouski in a tie-breaker game, then dumped Drummondville in the semifinal. The final was their fourth game in six days. They are the first team to win the Cup after having to play in a tie-breaker game.

The Kelowna Rockets and the Windsor Spitfires will be facing off in the Memorial Cup Final at 4 p.m. EST. The Spitfires were the comeback team in the tournament, the Rockets breezed on by securing a spot in just two games in the Memorial Cup. The Spitfires had to play 3 games in 4 days to get where they are, beating Rimouski to get to the semi-final, and Drummondville to get to the final.

Adam Henrique banged in a rebound 4:31 into overtime to lift the Ontario Hockey League champions to a hard-earned 3-2 victory over the Drummondville Voltigeurs in Friday’s semifinal to secure a spot in Sunday’s title game against the Kelowna Rockets.
“We were all over them and we had a few chances early in OT and we just had to keep to our game plan and keep it simple,” said Henrique, a New Jersey Devils prospect. ‘”Cousineau’s been great through the whole tournament.
The Spitfires got possession of the puck after a faceoff in the Drummondville zone, but Cousineau stopped shots from Henrique and Taylor Hall before the veteran centre finally fired one into the open goal.
Now Windsor will face a Kelowna team that has not played since it lost 2-1 to the Spitfires in its final round robin game on Tuesday.
“It’ll be a tough test, but everyone will get some rest (on Saturday) and that will be good.”
The 2009 tournament marks the first time since 1988 that neither of the QMJHL teams are in the final when the tournament is held in Quebec. That year, Medicine Hat beat Windsor in the Spitfires’ only previous Memorial Cup appearance.

Mitch Wellwood scored 3 goals, giving the Windsor Spitfires a comeback win. The Spitfires, who opened the tournament with two straight losses, including a 5-4 loss to Rimouski, advanced to the semifinal against the Drummondville Voltigeurs on Friday, with the winner facing the Kelowna Rockets in Sunday’s final. Windsor outshot the Oceanic 37-21. There was a noticeable change in volume on the home ice for the Oceanic compared to yesterdays game against the Drummondville Voltigeurs.
